rules of creativity /01
Rule 01: FOCUS.
Put on your blinders and turn off your phone. Distraction is the enemy of creativity. Multitasking and interruptions pull you away from your deep thought and out of your flow state.
I am so proud to show off how busy I am. I brag about how many notifications and buzzes my iPhone throws at me. I love those little red dots of drugs that dose out happiness. They tell me how important and needed I am.
I’m so accessible. I’m right here, everywhere, all the time. Anytime anyone wants to text, email, message me on Instagram or Slack or Discord or Whatsapp, I’ll be there to respond (but please don’t call me unless it is to Facetime with my kids). I’m begging for a distraction. I’m craving human interaction filtered through the protection of a slick glass screen.
I cannot stand the quiet. I need noise. I need music or a podcast or an audiobook or, better yet, a television to feed my eyes and ears in those microseconds between my lonely thoughts.
But this is not who I am meant to be. I am meant to be a creator. CREATIVE PEOPLE CREATE. To create I need to focus. I need to enjoy the silence. I need to listen to my own thoughts and my own body. I need to ignore the technology that is so fun but so distracting. I need to shut out the world and enter a flow state. I need to do this every day.
