why i create

I try to create something every day. I don’t always set aside time properly, and when I don’t, I can really feel it. I was thinking about this recently and asked myself why. While prioritizing the act of creating in my life, I realized that looking at why I create is more helpful than looking at what I create. Here are 9 reasons why I create. Why do you create?

/ I create to encourage change. First and foremost, everything is about change. Change in me, change in others, change in the world at large.

/ I create to make connections with other humans. We are human because of other humans. Connectivity is essential to life. I cannot create in a bubble, I need to be connected.

/ I create to feed my soul. What does my soul need? Confidence, peace, comfort. It is always different, but whatever it needs that day, I can find a way to feed it by creating.

/ I create to give others what they need. To feed their souls. I don’t know what your soul needs. But you need something. I cannot give you everything, but I might be able to give you something.

/ I create to learn about the world. Curiosity and growth are part of who I am. Creating teaches me to look with fresh eyes, examine every detail, and suspend judgment as my horizon expands.

/ I create to learn about myself. Self-examination is sometimes difficult for me. They say every piece of art is a self-portrait. Everything I create tells me something about myself that I didn’t know before.

/ I create to express myself, expose myself, or simply feel seen. Beyond learning about myself, I want others to know me. Creating is my way of being vulnerable.

/ I create to still my mind. Creation is a form of relaxation. Going into the flow state and losing myself in the art is like a combination of meditation and prayer.

/ I create to process my thoughts and emotions. While my attention is on my hands, my thoughts and feelings can finally be free. They can float here and there, come and go. My mind naturally breaks them apart, filters them, and reconnects them, much like a dream.
